 NWTRC Horse Receives National Recognition

Kurt, a 15 year old Norwegian Fjord horse, received the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association 2006 Region 9 horse of the year. Julia Bozzo, the Center’s director received the honor for Kurt at the NARHA national conference held on November 11 in Indianapolis. In addition to Washington State, Region 9 includes Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho and Montana.

Founded in 1993, the NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center, located on Kelly Road, provides equine-facilitated therapy to residents of Whatcom and Skagit counties. The NWTRC has served up to 32 clients per week ranging in age from 2 to 74. Clients include individuals with autism, Down Syndrome, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, and learning/behavior disabilities. NWTRC riders work with staff, volunteers, and the horses to maximize their capabilities. The center offers a program and environment that is safe, nurturing, challenging, and fun.
